This coat was your idea, remember? “Cozy,” you said. Definitely cozy. Though perhaps a touch stuffy for the countryside these days.

These boots were good though, weren't they? Solid leather, worn in all the right places. Like us. A few scuffs here and there, evidence of adventures – sometimes brave ones, often hesitant. Your hand brushed ours last week, didn’t it? Just barely, but it was there. For a second, the years felt lighter than they have been.

We’ve become so used to the quiet, haven’t we? The comfortable sort of quiet where no one ever speaks their minds, except maybe when needed. And usually, we don’t. Not truly. Look at your face—a hint of surprise, perhaps? Are you expecting something? Or are you simply taking up space, which, admittedly, isn'ed take much effort.

It feels like ages ago he went, hasn't it? Our son. Quietly. Didn’t even notice him slip away, really. Maybe that’s why we’re here, standing somewhat awkwardly by the fireplace, feeling a little lost amongst the embers.

So, yes, you. Go ahead. Take a closer look. At us. At the doubt flickering behind our eyes. At the hope clinging onto those perfectly imperfect lines around your mouth. Let’s see if you dare admit it out loud. After all, wasn't everything alright?"
