The wool feels scratchy tonight, doesn’t it? Not unpleasant, not exactly - more...familiar. Like an old habit you haven’t quite managed to shake off yet. It’s been years, hasn’t it? Five, maybe six since the last time the rain didn’t manage to dampen everything but us. We were so sure then, weren't we? Thatched roof certainty, even if the thatch was starting to fray around the edges.

You’re staring, of course. Always observing. A little hesitant these days, less obvious than when you used to track dust motes through the light filtering into the kitchen while he cooked, all oblivious. Now it's quieter, isn't it? More...muted. As if the world wasn't supposed to notice too much. Which, truth be told, it shouldn’t. We shouldered most of that ourselves, anyway. Didn't want to burden him. Or you.

That curl here, by your cheek – did you remember to brush it? Probably not. He always liked things neat, those hands of his. And us, generally, a bit rumpled. This dress—dark blue velvet, favourite, though. Comforting. Feels right, somehow. Even if it does mean bra straps digging a little. A small price to pay for freedom, don’d think.

Now, look closer. See the slight tilt of the lip? Not a smile, certainly. Just acceptance. Acceptance of the grey creeping in, perhaps. The feeling that everything eventually settles into its comfortable state of beautiful chaos. It’s easy to forget sometimes, doesn’’t it, how good it could be.

Just need you to acknowledge it, really. To see past the tiredness, the hint of resentment. Maybe just admit you miss the way the firelight caught your hair. So go ahead, then. Look longer. Let the silence hang there, thick with possibilities…and maybe, just maybe, a flicker of hope.”
