The Gilded Cage of Cold Water and Warm Skin
The water isn't cold; it’s a sharp, crystalline reminder of everything I have sacrificed to belong in his world.
I stand beneath the cascade, my skin slick with moisture that mirrors the sweat on my brow from yesterday’s board meeting. He watches me from the shadows of the veranda—a predator masquerading as a benefactor. To anyone else, this is an oasis. To me, it is his laboratory where he dissects my composure piece by piece.
"You look like you're drowning," his voice drifts through the humid air, smooth and terrifyingly intimate.
I don’t turn around. I let the water wash over my breasts, feeling the weight of his gaze more heavily than the current. My pulse is a traitorous rhythm against my ribs—a frantic drumbeat in an otherwise silent palace of glass and stone. He wants me healed? Or does he simply want to see how much pressure it takes before I finally break?
I close my eyes, letting a single drop trace the line of my collarbone. In this modern wasteland of steel and ambition, his touch is both the medicine and the poison. One day soon, I will stop shivering under his gaze; instead, I will be the one who controls the flow.
